Walk to School Day

Walk and bike to school events bring schools and communities together to celebrate the many benefits of walking and biking as modes of transportation. Promoting walking and biking to your students may help establish healthy habits for life. Please feel free to visit these pages to learn more about national and statewide traditions that take place throughout the school year.

South Carolina Walk to School Day – The first Wednesday in March is South Carolina Walk to School Day. Although this event is relatively new (it started in 2012), it has shown to be a popular event across the state. This event is a great way to celebrate SRTS during the spring season!

National Bike to School Day – This event occurs in early May. The date is coordinated between the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the League of American bicyclists. Students may participate by walking or biking. The entire month of May is celebrated as National Bike Month.

International Walk to School Day – Typically the first Wednesday of the first full week in October is International Walk to School Day. This is the oldest of the three events, with its start in 2002. Since then thousands of schools have participated, and continue to do so each year! All of October is Walk to School Month.
