Upstate Success Story--2017

In 2016, Safe Routes to School champions at Oakridge Middle School (OMS) in Clover, South Carolina, set a goal to become a Platinum level partner with the South Carolina Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Resource Center. While the school is located off a major roadway and not conveniently located to residential neighborhoods, the school identified the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety education and physical activity for their students. During the 2016-2017 school year, a small group of OMS staff and parents worked with the Resource Center to finalize a travel plan to form a strong foundation for safety at the school. In addition to regular walk at school events, which the school calls, “Walking with the Eagles”, the school implemented regular bicycle and pedestrian safety moments during the morning announcement. In order to share the lessons learned from Safe Routes to School programming, the same group of staff, parents, and students created a video to share on YouTube. Please check out the OMS video to learn more about their strategies and successes.
